City Road Infrastructure
Observations of the Study

1. The road width is not uniform at any locations. It is narrow and sufficient traffic Lanes are not available
2. Though most of the roads are pucca, the road structure is weak and hence damaged considerably.
3. There is no footpath for practically all roads and it is unfit for pedestrian usage.
4. The maintenance of the Roads is very poor
5. The percentage of the concrete roads is very less. Most of the main roads are asphalt roads.
6. The road crossings and junctions are not properly laid out and the traffic control and regulations are not effective.
7. The side burns, which are in Murrum formations, yield under the monsoon conditions and practically serve no purpose.
8. The streetlights are not properly located and it becomes hazardous at many locations.
9. Existing open drains along the road is joint to the existing sewerage system
10. The roads near the railway station are not wide enough to cope with the flow of traffic.
11. Most of the roads are affected by encroachments.

Status

The city has about 15 kms of state highway and the total length of the Urban Roads is approximately 415 kms. The area utilized under the transportation and communication is about 15 % of the city area (253.59 ha). The proportion of the land utilization is in accordance with the prevailing standards but the quality and condition of these roads are very poor. The maintenance of the roads also is not satisfactory. In monsoon season the traffic suffers considerably due to poor condition. Most of the roads in the gaothan area are narrow .

The existing roads are not adequate to minimum current flow and will not be able to cater for future development. It will not be possible to cope with the Gurdwara tercentenary event under the prevailing road condition

The status of the major roads of the city is as under: -

1. Arterial Road

This road is named M.G Road / VIP Road / workshop Road rund the full length of the city. It is wide with four traffic lanes and runs full length to the whole city. It is wide with four traffic lanes good quality construction and adequate sewerage and drainage facilities.

2. Access Roads to Gurdwara:

1. Guru Tegh Bahadur Singh Road: This road is one of the main roads connecting railway station with the Gurdwara. This road does not have well defined traffic lanes and is not provided with the proper sewerage and storm water facilities. The road-covering surface is not properly maintained. Since this road has to handle major traffic from station to Gurdwara, it will be necessary to provide proper surfacing, traffic lanes, divider junctions and streetlights.

2. Chickelwadi Road:

This road connects Mohammed Ali Road to the Gurdwara Road and is extremely important for the Gurdwara .The road is heavily loaded and is in a very poor condition without even the basic tarring and does not have the traffic lanes dividers street lights, foot path, drainage etc. It will not be able to serve the traffic of 2008 in the present condition. All the encroachments are required to be cleared and the road to be reconstructed for future development. The approved TPS details also have to be studied and implemented.

3. Bhagat Singh Road:

This road runs parallel to the Chickelwadi road and is another important roads to access the Gurdwara. As explained above the service condition of the roads is very poor as the status of the road is similar to the Chickelwadi road. The road suffers from bad surface condition narrow lanes, improper drains and sewerage arrangements. This road is used as an alternative / bypass to access the Gurdwara for the tercentenary function and restructuring this road has its priority in the development if the city. This road leads to Bapna road.

4. Bapna Road:

This road is also an important road to access the Gurdwara. This road leads to Subhash road, which is a very busy area. The status of the roads is very poor as explained above. The road also gets flooded in the rainy season due to very poor and inadequate drainage arrangements. The renovation and restructuring of the roads will have to planned as a priority.

5. Monta Road:

This road has been renovated recently and lead to one of the busy market areas called square market. This road is also important to access the Gurdwara.

6. Gurdwara Gate NO: 3 –

This road is also in a very poor condition. Considering the relevance of the road as an important convergence point for the crowd movement the development of the road has top be taken up as a priority. The whole area is highly congested and encroached for commercial and residential purposes. A master plan for the entire area is proposed by the Gurdwara authorities and road planning to suit the further traffic load will have to be done.

7. Naghina Ghat Road:

This road leads to the important Gurudwara at Naghina Ghat. The road is narrow and is encroached by shops all, along the road. This road also provides access to various accommodation facilities of the Gurdwara. Though the layout of this road is decent it should be made freer to access the Naghina Ghat.

Proposed Developments:

The Sachkhand Gurdwara inside the city area would exert considerable pressure on the city roads and these roads will have to be developed based on the traffic management arrangements as visualized for the pilgrim movement. The following roads will have to be considered for development in the event context.

The roads will play an important role in the event for the pilgrims to access city; visit various Gurdwara in the city and outside and for implementing the traffic management plans in the city area.

The key improvement that has to be made in the city road sections is as follows:
• Existing city roads which are narrow, over crowded and with encroachments at many locations have to planned to make it more wide, restructure and more resurfaced with proper footpath, street lights, reconstruction of open drains etc.
• Roads near the Gurdwara will be replanned to suit the master planning requirements of the Gurdwara.
• Additional flyover / over bridge and three tier road arrangement near the railway station.
Access Road to Nanded City
Observations of the Study

The roads are based on the black cotton soil in most of the area. Under wet monsoon conditions, the black cotton soil yields if the drainage of sub soil water is not effective
• The side berms are not properly constructed. It appears that they are constructed i•n Morrum and are directly resting on the Black Cotton soil, which have yielded under hot/rainy season conditions.
• The roadside open drains are not proper. They are not constructed for proper section to carry full storm water drainage. The quality of construction is very poor and the rainwater spills over the berms.
• The major open drains in city along these roads carrying storm water to river are not constructed in masonry/ concrete. The roadside drains gets back charged due to overflow conditions. The open drains are connected to sewer lines in the roads, which are already flowing to maximum capacity, and hence the storm water is not effectively drained.
• The maintenance of the road is not done properly. The contractual; system does not appear to be effective to carry out prompt repairs.
• The encroachment/shops/ houses in city area poses serious problems on keeping traffic lanes effective.

Status of Access Roads:

The majority trade and agriculture activities of the Nanded city are dependent on the Road Transport. During the tercentenary event visitors from Nagpur Hyderabad or Aurangabad airport are likely to travel by road and it is important to maintain the access road s to Nanded in good service conditions. A suitable tolling process could be introduced at Nanded to recover the costs incurred in the repair and to better the conditions of the access road to Nanded.

1. Deglur Road: This road connects Nanded with Deglur and further to Hyderabad. The traffic on this road is very high and the road is damaged at many locations. The road is narrow and the traffic lanes are not well defined. The junctions and the roads crossings are not properly laid and which results in the traffic jams and slows traffic movement. The junction at the hingoli road and Muhammedali road is extremely important for the access to the Gurudwara but is not properly managed. The entire road in the city area requires restructuring and replanning existing the hingoli road to facilitate proper traffic planning and smooth traffic flow. This road will act as the access road to Gurudwara from the largest camps planned Shikhar Ghat and Matasaheb and hence the improvement of the Road takes priority in the development process.

2. Hingoli Road: This road connects the Hingoli and Nagpur with Nanded. The airstrip is along this road and hence this road requires more attention for improvement. It already has a lane system and but the berms and drains are poor and hence affecting the traffic. It will be necessary to plan a camp near Maltekadi Gurdwara, as this is the most important requirement for transport to the city and Gurdwara.

3. Malegaon Road: This road connects Aurangabad to Nanded and is important for the Commercial/economic improvement, which will have to be planned as a priority.

4. Ring Road: This road is under construction due to expansion of the airstrip area, part of the hingoli road will be covered under the acquired land and the ring road is being planned as a by pass road joining the hingoli road to deglur road. The road encircling the airstrip area will be important for Normal as well as Tri-centenary event for transport of pilgrims to the Gurdwara region as a major camp will have to be planned near the Maltekadi Gurdwara. This will also be an access road from the new railway station planned to the city area.

The following shows the existing condition of various strategic roads in the city, which will be of relevance during the event.
