Status

The water supply to the Nanded city is made from the Godavari River and the Asna River through jack wells. The water supply schemes were functioning since 1936, which was further, augmented with supplementary scheme in 1969. The scheme was designed for the population of 2.7 Lacs in 1991. According to the 1991 census, the population of Nanded has reached 2, 74,656 persons. Based on past population growth rate Nanded’s population in this year has reached 4,25,000 and the projected figure by 2011 will be 5,00,000.The water requirement for this population will be 50 MLD.
The number of visitors expected for the Tercentenary event would be about 25-30 Lacs. The water requirement for these pilgrims would be about 100 MLD. The present storage capacity would be sufficient, but the pumping capacity for the existing system is for a population of about 4 lacs at the rate of 90 LPD the total capacity would be only 35-40 MLD.

Sources of Water Supply for the City
Vishnupuri Storage Dam

The present source of water supply is the Vishnupuri Storage Dam in the river Godavari Upstream of Nanded.his water is supplied for irrigation purposes also. Hence with increasing demand irrigation and city water supply,

the source at the Vishnupuri may not be sufficient at the present supply rate by the year 2016 when the population will reach to 6 lacs.
Further increase in population would result in further decrease in the supply rate per capita in the city. Over a period of 20-25 years this source will need to augmented.

Mughat Water Supply Scheme

A water supply scheme for Mughat and other six villages around Shikhar Ghat Gurdwara was prepared and executed in part. This is under the charge of Executive Engineer, water supply rural area of Nanded Zillah Parishad. The scheme, which was in operation for some time, has developed certain problems and is practically redundant now. However the pumping machinery and pipe network are available.

Upper Penganga Scheme

A canal runs from the Upper Penganga Scheme, which is about 22 Kms from the city. The topography of the area indicates that the ground levels from Fatgaon to Nanded drops by 37 meters and a natural slope is available by which water can be moved through gravitational propulsion without any pumping.

Proposed New Developments in Water Supply for the City

It would be necessary to take action as follows.
Enhance the Pumping Capacity

It will be most important to assess the available pumping capacity of the pumps in use. A study will be necessary for trial runs of all pumps to check the pumping capacity and the existing condition of the pumps.

In case stand by pumps are available in the pump rooms these pumps will be used in the regular pumping mode during the event period. Servicing and overhauling of all the pumps should be arranged well in time to bring every pump in good working condition.

Additionally safety arrangements at pump house, including non-return valves, automatic controls for step-on arrangements and float valves at receiving points, so that wastage of the pumping can be avoided.

Augment the Water Sources

As explained above the Vishnupuri storage requires augmentation. It will be necessary to create storage capacity of about 20-25 % of the total yearly requirement on Nanded near Fatgaon. A suitable valve house with standby emergency pumps will be erected at Fatgaon and the water can be lead to the city through CI/MS pipes. The arrangement will be useful for the Gurdwara event as a standby source of water.

City Focus

The main developments proposed for water supply for the city is as follows:

• One more pumping station has to be set up at the Vishnupuri with one
• Water treatment plant will be constructed.
• New water mains, o/h tanks and pipe network in North part of Nanded and
the villages in NWMC.
• Augmentation of the water supply from Pen Ganga canal scheme
• More bunds in the river will create more water storage

Water Supply for the Camps
Maltekadi Gurudwara Camp Site

A major camp for the visitors is going to be setup near Maltekadi Gurdwara where ample private land and government land are available. The River Asna flows close by and a KT Bandhara is available which is 2-3 kms away from the campsite.

As per the new water supply scheme (58 crores) presently under execution three new storage tanks will be constructed at Mhaja, Sanghvi and Kamatha, which will supply about 7 lac litres of water. A continuous pumping for the storage tanks will have to be arranged. This supply will be adequate for about 3-4 lacs of pilgrims for drinking purpose. A separate drinking water distribution network will be necessary at the campsite.

The balance water for other purposes especially sewerage and bathing need not be supplied through the overhead tanks constructed for treated water. The water from river Asna can be pumped directly to the campsite where separate network of pipes to various points will serve the pilgrim needs.

Shikhar Ghat Gurudwara Camp Site

Another major camp will be setup between Shikhar Ghat Gurdwara to Hira Ghat on Riverbank and Shikhar Ghat Gurdwara to south side on the bank of Godavari River. The length of this strip along the riverbank will be around 3-4 kms and hence a temporary pumping station will have to be erected. The visitors have to be accommodated in this camp site will be around 20 lacs and the water requirement for all purposes will be around 50 MLD. Out of this the drinking water requirement will be around 15 MLD. A separate pumping arrangement from the river with separate network of supply distribution pipeline for drinking water will be necessary as this water will be provided with chlorine dose at the pumping stage itself. Balance water for the camp can be directly pumped for the camp and supplied with separate network, which does not require any chlorine doses.

Since the event will be in the month of October adequate water source through the river will be available. However it will be necessary to construct two bunds / bandharas in this stretch of river course so that enough storage will be available for camp utilization.

These bunds will be shallow about 1.5- 2 M projecting above the riverbed and the storage tanks generated due to these bunds will be useful for bathing in the Holi river Godavari for the pilgrims. Further these storages will add source of water for pumping and meeting the future needs of the growing population.

However the pumping machinery and pipe network are available and the scheme can be rechecked for design as well as service conditions and is advisable to revive this scheme for additional pumping capacities in view of the proposed camp at the Shikharghat Gurdwara. After the 2008 event this water supply scheme with the increased pumping capacity would function as a regular water supply scheme to many other villages around this area.

Miscellaneous Water Supply Arrangement

Total land requirement for the temporary accommodation will be to the tune of 2500 acres. The land available at the above three camps, if less than 2000 acres, it will be necessary to setup more camps in the NWCMC open plots in the villages acquired under the Corporation. Since the villages are covered under the corporation area, the water supply arrangements could be made through water supply scheme either existing or proposed for the villagers.

A network of the new water supply pipeline will have to be proposed as per development plan, which will be useful permanently for this area after the Gurdwara event. The NWCMC is already executing the 58 crore new city water supply scheme, which shall be expanded to cover the balance areas of the villages. It will also be necessary to construct overhead tanks of adequate capacity for proper distribution in this area.

The existing water supply arrangements like lakes, wells, bore are required to be assessed for determining the total water availability. This source shall be tapped for alternate/emergence water supply to the camps, which will be located in these villages. An underground storage tank with pumping arrangements will have to be designed.

It will also be necessary to construct adequate numbers of drinking water tanks with sufficient taps and movement area at all the camps so that the pilgrims can get enough drinking water. Sintex tanks of 5000 litre capacity will have to be erected around the tents to improve the water supply.

As emergency measure water tankers shall be available to supply water at locations where water is not available due to any mechanical fault or power failure.
